Leonor Fini was an Argentine-Italian artist known for her work in painting, illustration, set and costume design. Largely self-taught, she studied anatomy in morgues and techniques from Old Masters. After early exhibitions in Milan, she moved to Paris in 1931 and became associated with surrealist circles, though she rejected the label. Her art often explored female power and gender fluidity, frequently using sphinx imagery. Fini designed for theatre, ballet, opera, and film, and illustrated numerous books.
