Charlotte Perriand
1903-1999

Charlotte Perriand was a French architect and designer known for her contributions to modern furniture. She studied at the École de l’Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs and early in her career worked with Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Jean Prouvé. Joining Le Corbusier’s studio in 1927, she helped develop iconic modernist furniture, including tubular steel designs such as the chaise longue and innovative seating systems that helped define 20th-century design. Her work combined industrial materials and technology with a strong respect for natural forms and traditional craftsmanship. In 1941, she worked in Japan as a design consultant, exploring local materials such as bamboo and straw, an experience that deeply influenced her later integration of natural materials into modernist design. Her work is held in major collections, including the MoMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
