Charles Dudouyt
1885-1946

Charles Dudouyt was a French artist and furniture designer known for his distinctive blend of Art Deco and rustic French design. He studied at the École Germain Pilon in Paris (now ENSAAMA) and began his career as an illustrator for publishers and satirical magazines. After serving in World War I, he turned to decorative arts and furniture design. In the early 1920s, he founded the workshop L’Abeillée in Pontoise, producing robust furniture that reinterpreted traditional French craftsmanship through modern forms. He later moved to Paris and founded La Gentilhommière, a workshop and showroom where he produced chairs, cabinets, armchairs, and credenzas in oak, ash, and beech, often incorporating leather, wicker, and rope. During this period he developed a more contemporary style while maintaining his signature use of solid wood and expressive carving, helping to modernize rustic French furniture for a wider audience.
